Welcome to My Personal Page
Dear Family and Friends:
On September 17 I will be joining friends from Philadelphia to ride in the Breakthrough Bike Challenge, a 25 mile ride through rural Berks County, Pennsylvania. This event was started in 2013 by a group of bicycle enthusiasts to help raise funds for cancer research at The Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania. This “mini Pan Mass” ride has doubled its fundraising every year, providing $300,000 of research support in 2016.
I am once again joining the Martin Family Team, headed by a dear friend Jennifer Pinto-Martin. Jennifer’s husband, Muscoe became one of my closest friends while we attended architecture school at Penn, and Susan and I have always treasured our times spent with Muscoe, Jennifer and their children. Muscoe died of glioblastoma in 2014 at the age of 59.
Some thoughts on why I believe the Breakthrough ride is a great investment in cancer research: 100% of money raised goes toward funding pilot grants for young investigators at the Abramson Cancer Center. (All ride and administrative costs are underwritten by the Board and sponsors, and Penn does not receive money for indirect research costs.) Breakthrough funding is only one of two sources of pilot grant support at the Abramson. These grants, which are typically on the order of $50,000, are critical seed funding, allowing scientists to develop preliminary and promising data that they use in applying for NIH grants. For pilot studies that succeed, your contribution will be leveraged into major research. Already, Breakthrough pilot grants have led to new long-term funding, including glioblastoma research.
Please go to my fundraising site at http://www.breakthroughbikechallenge.org/site/TR/Bike_Challenge/General?px=1001849&pg=personal&fr_id=1070 or go to www.breakthroughbikechallenge.org and search for me under Martin Family Team. In addition, all donations made before 11:59pm, Friday, August 18th will be doubled by the Board and other supporters.
