Welcome to My Personal Page
Dear Family and Friends:
On September 16th I will be riding for the third consecutive year through rural Berks County, Pennsylvania in support of The Breakthrough Bike Challenge. This event was started in 2013 by a group of bicycle enthusiasts to raise funds for cancer research. The ride provides important support to young investigators at the Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center.
Once again, I am joining the Martin Family Team headed by my friend Jennifer Pinto-Martin. Jennifer’s husband, Muscoe attended architecture school with me at Penn, and Susan and I have always treasured our times spent with Muscoe, Jennifer and their four children (two of whom are in the Martin Team photo from last year’s ride). Muscoe died of glioblastoma in 2014 at the age of 59.
Some thoughts on why I believe the Breakthrough ride is a great investment in cancer research: 100% of money raised goes toward funding pilot grants for young investigators at the Abramson Cancer Center. (All ride and administrative costs are underwritten by the Board and sponsors, and Penn does not receive money for indirect research costs.) Breakthrough funding is only one of two sources of pilot grant support at the Abramson. These grants, which are typically on the order of $50,000, are critical seed funding, allowing scientists to develop preliminary and promising data that they use in applying for NIH grants. For pilot studies that succeed, your contribution will be leveraged into major research. Is it working? Last summer the FDA approved groundbreaking cancer immunotherapy treatment (CAR-T) developed at Penn by Carl June. His research began with a pilot grant, much as the ones being funded by the BBC. And last December we met with Penn researchers whose work funded by BBC grants has made significant advances in understanding pancreatic, breast and other cancers.
